What are the byproducts of a goose hatchery?
While the main product of a goose hatchery is obviously goslings, the byproducts of a hatching operation are typically the infertile eggs.  Utilization of this byproduct is now the primary focus of our business.  All of the infertile egg is used in some way.  The contents are typically mixed in with livestock feeds.  The remaining "blown egg" are sold to many people and businesses interested in arts & crafts for decorating in a variety of different ways.  Take a look at what some of our customers have done with our products by clicking here.

How do you remove the contents of the egg?
A small hole, approximately 3/16" in diameter, is drilled in the center of the large end, or base, of the egg.  The contents are extracted from this hole by machine designed specifically to perform this task.

I need a hole drilled on both ends of the egg.  Can you do this?
Yes we can.  The second hole can be any size.  Please make this request when placing your order.

What chemicals do you use to clean, fumigate and sanitize your eggs?
The eggs are cleaned in several stages of the process using a liquid detergent.  The sanitizing compound is mixture but consists primarily of a liquid bleach.  Fumigation is performed using potassium permanganate and formaldehyde.

How do you check to see if an egg is fertile or infertile?
We use the tried and true method of candling an egg.  Essentially a bright light is placed on one side of the egg, illuminating its interior.  When view from the opposite side, a fertile egg will show the gosling embryo and a network of vessels.  An infertile egg will show nothing.

When is the laying season for geese? What affects the timing of this season?
The laying season in the upper Midwest region of the United States typically starts in the beginning of March and goes through the end of June.  The start of the season can be affected by long stretches of cold weather in late February as well as heavy snowfalls.  Regardless of when it began the end of the season is usually fairly consistent to end in mid June.
